Have you noticed how everyone is talking about nervous system safety lately? It’s all over YouTube, Instagram, podcasts, trauma therapy spaces—and especially in the brain rewiring community. People are calling it the key to healing trauma, anxiety, and chronic health challenges.

And they’re right.

A nervous system that feels unsafe will keep you anxious and sick no matter what you try. But here’s the thing—most conversations about nervous system safety are missing something critical. Something that can change everything.


Why Nervous System Safety Matters

Your brain has one main priority: to keep you alive. If it perceives threat, it will not give your body permission to heal.

Instead of supporting digestion, detoxification, sleep, and repair, it diverts all your energy and resources into survival mode. That’s why you can be doing all the “right” things—supplements, special diets, therapies—and still not see results.

Only when your brain perceives safety do those vital healing functions switch back on. Safety is the state your nervous system needs in order for your body to heal.


Why Supplements and Talk Therapy Aren’t Enough

This is where many approaches fall short.

Pills, supplements, detoxes, or even talk therapy don’t speak the language of the nervous system. The part of the brain that drives survival—the limbic system—doesn’t respond to logic or reasoning. It responds to behaviors and emotions.


Simple Somatic Tools That Signal Safety

Somatic simply means “of the body.” Somatic tools are practices that use your body to send signals of safety up to your brain. They bypass logic and reasoning and instead speak the language your nervous system understands: sensation, movement, and emotion.

Here are a few examples you can try right away:

  • Yawning – even a “fake” yawn can trigger a calming response in your brain.

  • Shaking it out – gently shake your arms, legs, or whole body to release tension.

  • Self-havening (stroking your arms) – running your hands slowly down your arms brings a sense of comfort and grounding.

  • Humming or singing – vibration from your voice stimulates the vagus nerve and promotes relaxation.

  • Hugging yourself – crossing your arms and squeezing your shoulders gives your body a sense of safety and reassurance.

These practices are simple, but powerful. They send bottom-up signals that help the brain shift from survival mode into a state of safety.


God’s Design for Our Bodies

What I love about this is how beautifully it aligns with God’s design. He created our bodies to move, to express emotion, and to worship Him not just with our words, but with our whole being.

That’s why I weave these practices into my brain rewiring program. They are simple, practical ways to help restore safety to the nervous system.

But here’s the truth: while somatic tools are helpful, they are not enough on their own.


The Missing Piece in Nervous System Conversations

As Christians, we know that safety does not ultimately come from a tool or a technique. True safety comes from the presence of Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 18:10 reminds us: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
And Psalm 139:13 declares: “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

Friend, you are fearfully and wonderfully made—including your nervous system.

You can practice every somatic tool under the sun, but if you leave Jesus out of the process, it will never sit right in your spirit. Because safety isn’t ultimately found in a practice or technique—it’s found in the Person of Jesus Christ.
