3-Steps to Stop a Panic Attack
Maybe you’ve been having panic attacks—so many that you’re afraid to leave your house or drive your car. If you’re honest, your world has become safe and small.
If that’s you, I want you to know: you don’t have to live this way. God has so much more for you than a life of fear and limitation. The enemy would love nothing more than to keep you anxious and stuck, but the truth is this:
“God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
And friend—freedom really is available to you.
I know because I’ve been there. I used to have panic attacks too—lots of them. I know what it’s like to feel trapped in your own body, sure that your heart is going to pound right out of your chest. But I also know the way out—and it’s through Christian brain retraining. By learning how to rewire the brain and calm the limbic system, I was able to step into lasting peace—and so can you.
What a Panic Attack Really Is (and What It’s Not)
Let’s start with the basics: what is a panic attack?
First, here’s what it’s not:
-
It’s not a heart attack.
-
It’s not proof you’re losing your mind.
-
And it’s not going to kill you.
I know it feels terrifying in the moment, but those feelings aren’t telling you the truth.
At its core, a panic attack is your body’s alarm system misfiring. It happens in the limbic system—the part of your brain that processes emotions and constantly scans for threats.
When you’ve been under prolonged stress or walked through trauma, your limbic system can get stuck in overdrive. Instead of sounding the alarm only when real danger is present, it starts setting off false alarms.
It’s kind of like someone pulling a fire alarm when there’s no fire. The alarm blares, hearts race, panic sets in—but the reality is, everyone is safe.
That’s why panic attacks can hit anywhere—at work, at home, even in your sleep. Your heart pounds, your chest tightens, you feel dizzy, shaky, sweaty, or short of breath. And then—little by little—it passes.
And that right there is proof that nothing was wrong with your heart or your mind. It was your limbic system misfiring, trying to protect you from a threat that wasn’t real.
Why You Can’t “Talk Yourself Out of It”
This leads to the next big question: if panic is just a false alarm, why can’t you simply tell yourself to calm down and move on?
Here’s why: the part of your brain that’s setting off the alarm—the limbic system—doesn’t respond to logic. It doesn’t “speak English.” It speaks the language of emotions and body signals.
Your emotional brain is designed for survival, not reasoning. So when you tell yourself, Calm down, you’re fine, those words are reaching your thinking brain (the prefrontal cortex), but the panic is being driven by your limbic system.
That’s why in the heat of the moment, what you do with your body matters more than what you say with your mouth.
Now, that doesn’t mean words are useless. They just play a different role. Think of it this way: your body helps calm you in the moment, but your words help retrain your brain so panic loses its grip in the future. This is exactly where Christian brain rewire practices come in—renewing your mind both physically and spiritually.
What to Do Instead: The 3-Step Pattern Interrupt
So if logic doesn’t work, what does? You need something called a pattern interrupt—a way to break up the panic pathway your brain has started running.
Here’s a simple 3-step process you can practice anywhere:
1. Drop Your Shoulders
I like to call this the “go ragdoll” step. Loosen your muscles. Relax your grip. Slow your movements. Let your breath soften and become gentle. By doing this, you’re sending a powerful signal to your limbic system: I’m safe.
2. Speak Truth
Say out loud: This is just my brain having a panic attack. There’s nothing wrong with me. I’m safe in Christ. This will pass.
Remember, the goal isn’t to magically stop panic in the moment. The goal is to retrain your brain over time so panic attacks become less frequent and less intense.
3. Stay Where You Are
This might be the hardest part—but it’s also the most important. Stay in the aisle, finish your shopping, keep doing what you were doing. By resisting the urge to flee, you’re teaching your brain that the alarm was false.
Is it uncomfortable? Absolutely. But discomfort isn’t danger. And every time you respond with calm instead of fear, you’re engaging in brain retraining—teaching your brain and body a new, healthier pattern.
The Faith + Science Path to Freedom
Walking through panic this way is how you teach your limbic system to turn down its overactive threat-detection system. Every time you choose calm, you starve the fear. Every time you stay present, you strengthen safety pathways.
This is the essence of brain rewiring—and it’s not just science. It’s also deeply rooted in Scripture. God created your brain with the ability to renew and transform. Romans 12:2 says, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
That’s why I created the Renew & Rewire Brain Retraining Method—a faith-filled, five-step process to overcome panic, anxiety, fatigue, and sensitivities. No gimmicks, no “new age” nonsense—just biblical truth and neuroscience working together the way God designed. It’s Christian brain rewire in action.
