Why Detox Alone Didn't Heal My Mold Illness (And What Finally Did)
Oct 09, 2026What if the missing piece in your mold illness recovery isn't another detox?
When you're told you have mold illness, you're usually told the answer is simple: find the mold, remove the mold, detox the mold. And if you're still sick, there must be more mold. I believed that too. I spent months searching for hidden mold, taking supplements, detoxing, avoiding buildings, and wondering why I still wasn't getting better.
Eventually, I realized I had been missing a really important piece. In this post, I'm sharing why detox alone wasn't enough for me, the one question I wish someone had asked me sooner, and what I needed to do differently to finally start healing.
My Mold Illness Story
After getting sick in 2020, I developed chronic fatigue, anxiety, panic attacks, dizziness, migraines, brain fog, food and other sensitivities, ringing in my ears, and depression, just to name a few. Like many of you, I went from doctor to doctor searching for answers.
Eventually, a functional practitioner diagnosed me with mold illness. Honestly, I was relieved. I finally had an explanation for why I felt so horrible. I thought, this is it. I'll eliminate the mold and get my life back.
When the Mold Detox Protocol Isn't Working
I started the mold protocol, and because I was so sensitive, I had to go incredibly slow. Even tiny amounts of supplements would flare my symptoms. I worked my way through the protocol and noticed some improvements, but they didn't last. Before long, I was right back where I started, still struggling, still searching, and wondering what in the world was wrong with me.
If I'm honest, I might have been a little angry with God.
Discovering Brain Retraining
Thank God, I was introduced to a therapist who recommended a brain retraining program. I didn't even know what that was at the time, so I started researching, and things finally began to make sense.
In a nutshell, brain retraining uses simple, evidence-based exercises to help your brain come out of chronic fight, flight, or freeze. It calms a hypersensitized nervous system and teaches it to recognize safety again, so your body can function the way God designed it to.
The Question I Wish Someone Had Asked Me Sooner
For months I had been asking, "How can I get rid of the mold?"
The better question was, "Why is my body hanging on to the mold in the first place?"
As a nurse, I knew the answer. A body stuck in chronic fight-or-flight isn't prioritizing healing, repair, or normal detoxification. It's prioritizing survival. You can't clean, eat, detox, or supplement your way out of a dysregulated, hypersensitized nervous system. At best, the results will be temporary, and that's exactly what I had experienced.
Why Your Nervous System Matters in Mold Illness Recovery
The biggest shift happened when I stopped focusing on how to limit my exposure to mold and started focusing on helping my brain and nervous system feel safe enough to do the work God designed my body to do.
The key to my recovery wasn't going to be another detox protocol or another doctor visit. It was going to come from helping my brain and nervous system come out of the chronic stress state I'd been living in for so long. And looking back, I don't regret anything I tried. It all brought me to where I am today, helping so many of you.
What Happened When I Committed to Brain Retraining
Day by day, I practiced the techniques and exercises. I started responding differently and taught my brain that it was safe again. Little by little, my body responded.
Within about five months, I was back to living my life. The chronic anxiety was gone, the fatigue lifted, and the brain fog all but disappeared. The food and other sensitivities were gone. I wasn't searching for mold in every bathtub and every building anymore. I was finally healing.
Romans 12:2 calls us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, and through neuroplasticity, God built that capacity for change right into our brains. Philippians 1:6 reminds us that He who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion. Your healing is not outside of His reach.
Still Sick After Mold Detox? Consider Your Nervous System
You may have been told you have mold illness. Maybe you've done the detoxes, taken the supplements, avoided buildings, and spent thousands of dollars searching for answers, and you're still not where you want to be. I'd strongly encourage you to consider whether your brain and nervous system may be what's holding you back.
When a nervous system has become hypersensitized, teaching it to feel safe again is the most important thing you can do to start moving the needle on your recovery.
And if you're a Christian, I encourage you to choose a brain retraining program that keeps Christ at the center. I couldn't imagine leaving God out of any part of my healing journey. That's why I created the Renew & Rewire Brain Retraining Method, a completely Christ-centered approach to nervous system healing.
